THE HUB
Kuta, South Lombok

Kuta is the heartbeat of the south coast. Not the Kuta of Bali, this is something entirely different. A small town that has grown organically around the surf, with a genuine community of travellers, guides, instructors and locals who have built something real here. The beaches fan out in both directions, each with its own character. Head east and you find Tanjung Aan, one of the most photographed bays in all of Lombok, with two distinct coves of powdery white sand. Head west and Mawun opens up, a sweeping horseshoe bay that sits quietly between Kuta and Selong Belanak and rewards anyone who makes the detour. Further west still, Are Guling is where the south coast's finest surf break peels below the clifftop villas of Somewhere Lombok, one of the most celebrated properties in Indonesia. The warung food is excellent. The sunsets are extraordinary. And the surf, from beginner-friendly breaks to serious reef, is what put the south coast on the map in the first place.

THE SWEET SPOT
Selong Belanak

Thirty minutes west of Kuta, the pace drops and the landscape opens up. Selong Belanak is one of the most beautiful bays in Indonesia, a long, sweeping crescent of white sand with calm water that glows turquoise on clear days. The surf here is gentler, the crowds thinner, the atmosphere more considered. Boutique hotels and private villas have found their natural home along this stretch, attracting visitors who want the beauty of the south coast without the bustle of the hub. East of Kuta, the south coast takes a different turn. Ekas Bay sits at the end of a long peninsula that juts into the Indian Ocean, and the waves that wrap around it are among the best right-handers in all of Lombok.
