REGION GUIDE

Northwest Lombok

Safari parks, turtle sanctuaries, coral reefs and a coastal road that gets more dramatic the further north you go. Northwest Lombok is where families find Lombok at its most generous.

Northwest Lombok runs from Senggigi and Mangsit along one of the most scenic coastal roads in Indonesia, through the volcanic cliffs of Malimbu and Nipah, out to the white sand beaches of Sire and Tanjung. The Gili Islands sit twenty minutes by boat from Bangsal Harbour. Taman Safari Lombok, the Pusuk monkey forest, turtle sanctuaries and coral snorkelling reefs are all within easy reach of a single base.

This is the part of Lombok that families come back to. The infrastructure here is the most developed on the island, the resort quality is high, and the activity range is genuinely broad enough to keep everyone engaged. The Sire Beach Golf Club, the only 18-hole coastal course in Lombok, sits alongside some of the most celebrated luxury properties on the island. Northwest Lombok does not ask you to rough it. It asks you to arrive, settle in and let the days fill themselves.

THE GATEWAY

Senggigi and Mangsit

Senggigi has been Lombok's most accessible beach destination for decades, and the town has grown with the confidence that comes from knowing its position. The beach stretches for several kilometres, the reef snorkelling begins just offshore, and the sunsets facing Mount Agung across the Lombok Strait are as good as any in Indonesia. Mangsit, a quieter stretch immediately north, is where the best boutique resorts have settled, close enough to Senggigi for convenience but far enough to feel genuinely peaceful. Day trips to the Pusuk monkey forest, Narmada Water Palace and the ancient Hindu-Waktu Telu temple at Lingsar all run easily from this base.

  • Reef snorkelling directly off Senggigi Beach, sea turtles regularly spotted

  • Sunsets facing Mount Agung, among the most celebrated in Indonesia

  • Day trips to Pusuk Pass monkey forest, a winding road through dense jungle canopy

  • Narmada Water Palace and Lingsar temple, both within 30 minutes inland

  • Holiday Resort Lombok, the most complete family resort on the coast with kids club, pony rides and turtle release experiences

  • Sudamala Resort, boutique beachfront villas with the best Ayam Taliwang on the island

  • Katamaran Hotel, cliff-edge glass pool with direct views across to Bali

THE DRAMATIC MIDDLE

Malimbu & Nipah

The coastal road north of Senggigi climbs into volcanic cliff country and the views become extraordinary. The Malimbu viewpoints are among the most photographed spots on the island, looking out over the Bali Sea with the Gili Islands and Mount Agung framed on the horizon. Nipah Beach, a few kilometres further, is where sea turtles come to feed in the shallows and local warungs grill fresh fish on the sand as the sun goes down. Royal Avila Boutique Resort sits directly on the Malimbu cliffs, one of the most dramatic positions of any property in Lombok, with an infinity pool, a winery and views that guests describe as stopping them mid-sentence. Puri Mas, built in traditional Lombok vernacular architecture on Mangsit Beach, is where the seafood dinners and the handcrafted wooden interiors make an impression that lasts.

  • Malimbu viewpoints, among the most dramatic coastal panoramas on the island

  • Nipah Beach sea turtles, feeding in the shallows with regularity

  • Royal Avila Boutique Resort, clifftop suites, infinity pool, winery and kids pool

  • Puri Mas Boutique Resort, traditional Lombok architecture with waterfront seafood dining

  • The Lombok Strait visible on clear days with both Gili Islands and Bali's Agung in frame

DRIVE WORTH TAKING

The coastal road from Senggigi to Nipah takes around 45 minutes and passes through some of the finest scenery in Lombok. Stop at every viewpoint. The light in the late afternoon is exceptional.

THE LUXURY CORRIDOR

Sire and Tanjung

At the northern tip of the northwest peninsula, the road opens onto a stretch of coastline that has attracted some of the finest hospitality in Indonesia. Sire Beach is white sand, calm water and the kind of clarity that makes snorkelling feel effortless. The Sire Beach Golf Club runs along the coast here, 18 holes with the ocean on one side and Rinjani visible on the other. Bangsal Harbour, the departure point for the Gili Islands, is minutes away. Taman Safari Lombok, where families encounter Indonesian wildlife up close, is the day trip that most guests here do at least once and many do twice. The Sira Luxury Collection, Anema Wellness Resort and Medana Resort all sit within this corridor, each offering a distinct experience of northwest Lombok at its most considered.

  • Sire Beach Golf Club, 18 holes on the coast with Rinjani views

  • Bangsal Harbour, ten minutes to the Gili Islands by fast boat

  • Taman Safari Lombok, Indonesian wildlife encounters for all ages

  • The Sira Luxury Collection, Lombok's only Marriott Luxury Collection property, opened 2024

  • Anema Wellness Resort, private beach villas with PADI dive centre on Sire Beach
