REGION GUIDE

North Lombok

An active volcano, jungle waterfalls, remote coastal roads and the kind of physical landscape that makes everything else feel small. North Lombok is Lombok at its most raw and rewarding.

North Lombok is defined by a single presence: Gunung Rinjani. At 3,726 metres, Rinjani is the second highest volcano in Indonesia and its influence shapes everything within reach. The climate, the landscape, the waterfalls, the villages, the trekking routes and the extraordinary views are all downstream consequences of living in the shadow of something this significant.

The Wild Adventure Flow follows the arc of the north from the accessible coastal base of Senggigi, along the dramatic clifftop road through Nipah and Malimbu, out to the remote luxury of the Sire and Tanjung peninsula, and finally inland and upward to Senaru where the national park begins. It is a journey from polished to raw, from coastal to volcanic, from comfortable to genuinely challenging. Each stop earns the next.

THE STARTING POINT

Senggigi the Adventure Base

Senggigi is where the Wild Adventure Flow begins. Accessible, well-connected and positioned at the start of the north coast road, it gives you everything you need before heading further into Lombok's more demanding terrain. The Gili Islands are twenty minutes by fast boat from Bangsal. Rinjani day trips are arranged from here. The coastal road north starts immediately above town and the first viewpoints arrive within fifteen minutes of leaving. The Chandi Boutique Resort, tucked into a coconut grove near Batu Bolong temple, is the base that feels like a retreat. Jeeva Klui Resort sits on its own stretch of Klui Beach, far enough from town to feel secluded but close enough to use as a genuine operational base for everything the north has to offer.

  • Fast boat connections to Gili Islands from Bangsal Harbour, 20 minutes north

  • Rinjani day trips and guided treks arranged from Senggigi operators

  • Batu Bolong temple, a Hindu sea temple on a volcanic rock outcrop north of town

  • The Chandi Boutique Resort, boutique coconut grove setting near Batu Bolong

  • Jeeva Klui Resort, traditional Sasak architecture on Klui Beach with yoga and beachfront infinity pool

  • Qunci Villas, 150 metres of Mangsit beachfront with award-winning spa and Italian chef

    THE DRAMATIC COAST

 Nipah & Malimbu

North of Senggigi the road climbs into volcanic cliff territory and the landscape becomes genuinely cinematic. The Malimbu viewpoints look out over the Bali Sea with Gili Air, Gili Meno and Gili Trawangan visible in the foreground and Mount Agung rising beyond them. Sea turtles feed in the shallows at Nipah Beach below. The stretch between Senggigi and Nipah is one of the finest coastal drives in Indonesia, and the light in the late afternoon turns the whole scene a particular shade of gold that stops drivers at the roadside. Seven Secrets by Hanging Gardens sits on a crescent of white sand at the end of a private road on this stretch, one of the most secluded and beautifully positioned properties in Lombok. Lombok Souls sits a short drive from the turtle beach, honest, well-priced and genuinely positioned for the experience of this coastline.

  • Malimbu viewpoints, the most dramatic coastal panoramas on the north coast road

  • Sea turtles feeding at Nipah Beach, reliably spotted year-round

  • Seven Secrets by Hanging Gardens, 24 suites on a private crescent beach

  • Lombok Souls, near Klui Beach, honest and well-reviewed

  • The finest coastal drive in Lombok, best experienced in the late afternoon light

FOR THE DRIVE

Leave Senggigi around 3pm heading north. Stop at every Malimbu viewpoint. Arrive at Nipah in time for the turtles at dusk. The whole drive takes 45 minutes but allow two hours if you want to do it properly.

THE REMOTE PENINSULA

Sire and Tanjung

The northwest peninsula is where the Wild Adventure Flow reaches its most luxurious point before turning inland toward the volcano. Medana Bay is calm, white and largely private. The Gili Islands sit ten minutes away by boat. The Sira, a Luxury Collection Resort and Spa, is Lombok's only Marriott Luxury Collection property, set on a quiet stretch of white sand with sweeping views toward the Gilis. The Oberoi Beach Resort has defined northwest Lombok luxury for decades, 24 acres of tropical gardens with a private beach, dance performances under the stars and a 40-metre pool. Hotel Tugu Lombok, six hectares of coconut plantation on Sire Beach filled with Majapahit-era art, is the most extraordinary property on the north coast, awarded a MICHELIN Key, the first in Indonesia, and unlike anything else on the island. From here the road turns east and the landscape begins its climb toward Rinjani.

THE VOLCANO GATEWAY

Senaru, Rinjani National Park

Senaru sits at the northern edge of Rinjani National Park, where the road ends and the jungle begins. The village is the starting point for the northern summit route and the base for two of the finest waterfalls in Lombok: Sending Gile, a powerful curtain of water 30 metres high accessible on a 30-minute walk from the village, and Tiu Kelep, a further 45 minutes into the jungle where a natural pool beneath the falls allows swimming in a setting that feels genuinely remote. Rinjani Lodge sits on the national park border with views overlooking the surrounding mountains, a twenty-minute walk from Sendang Gile waterfall. It is where the Wild Adventure Flow ends, or where the summit attempt begins. The oldest mosque in Lombok, Masjid Beleq, sits six kilometres down the hill from Senaru and dates to the early arrival of Islam on the island. North Lombok does not rush you toward anything. It simply makes clear what is possible.

  • Sendang Gile waterfall, 30 metres high, 30 minutes walk from the village

  • Tiu Kelep waterfall, 45 minutes deeper into the jungle, swimming in the natural pool beneath

  • Rinjani Trek Centre and the northern summit route starting point

  • Rinjani Lodge, mountain views and a twenty-minute walk to Sendang Gile waterfall

  • Masjid Beleq, the oldest mosque in Lombok, six kilometres below Senaru village

  • Dense jungle canopy, endemic birds and the last proper wilderness in Lombok

CLIMBING RINJANI

The summit of Gunung Rinjani sits at 3,726 metres and the climb is serious. The northern route from Senaru takes two to three days return. The crater lake, Segara Anak, sits at 2,000 metres and is reachable in a single long day for fit hikers. Always use a registered guide. The Rinjani Trek Centre in Senaru village coordinates all licensed trekking operations and can match you with the right guide and itinerary for your fitness level and available time.
